Dr. Dennis Edelbrock, founder of the National Trumpet Competition and professor of trumpet at George Mason University, had a 3-day residency in Iowa City. During this time, he performed a trumpet showcase recital with the trumpet studio, taught masterclasses at local schools, gave a clinic in the UI School of Music, and performed a solo titled Across the Clouds by Robert Thurston with the UI Symphony Band.

First Guest Artist of the Year - Judith Saxton

Two weeks ago, the University of Iowa School of Music hosted its first guest trumpet artist of the year, Judith Saxton. She is a certified Alexander Technique Instructor (ATI) as well as an extremely experienced trumpeter in both orchestral and solo settings.

During her visit, she shared with members of UI the school of music and the local community a wonderful experience of Alexander Technique in the early afternoon. Rather than explaining to everyone what Alexander technique is, she had all of the participants experience it first-hand.

Later, in the evening, she held a masterclass for members of the UI trumpet studio and local trumpeters within the community.

The UI Trumpet Ensemble traveled to Denver, CO March 23-25 to attend and compete in the National Trumpet Competition! The ensemble competed in the large ensemble division of the competition, and performed at the semi-final round. Although they did not advance into finals, a lot was learned at the performance and judges’ comments. Everyone enjoyed having the experience, and attended dozens of performances throughout the event.

Before the ensemble's semi-final performance, they were greeted by the founder of the National Trumpet Competition, Dr. Dennis Edelbrock, who happens to be a former hawkeye!

Members of the ensemble include:

Kenken Gorder - Piccolo Trumpet

Evan Fowler - Trumpet

Jarrid Jaynes - Trumpet

Lee Stickney - Trumpet

Joseph Arch - Trumpet

Claire McCall - Flugelhorn

Aunna Marzen - Flugelhorn

Each member became inspired and amazed as they listened to many performers throughout the competition. Even more, it became a chance for new friends and connections to be made. Some of the members also returned with a new horn! There was a little bit of everything (jazz, ensemble music, solo music, etc.). The ensemble is eager to compete again next year.

Tallgrass Brass Band in action!

Tallgrass Brass Band in action!

From March 10th through 11th of this year, current and former members of the UI Trumpet Studio participated in the North American Brass Band Association’s annual competition held in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Current members who participated are the studio’s graduate students, Evan Fowler and Kenken Gorder, and former members include Benjamin Drury, Laura Saylor, and Caitlin Berge. Dr. Schendel was also involved in the competition as well!

All the UI Trumpet Studio members listed were asked to join the Tallgrass Brass Band, a newly formed brass band that was comprised of some members of the Eastern Iowa Brass Band, two guest artists from Norway including Arfon Owen (Yamaha Performing Artist) and Paniz Gorang, professors from other universities, and graduate students. This band is led by Alex Beamer, who is also the conductor of the Eastern Iowa Brass Band. This group gathered together for only 6 days with 4-hour rehearsals each day in preparation for this competition. It was a melting pot of unique sounds that then became unified in the end!

Tallgrass Brass Band was competing in the championship section of the competition, and was one of 7 sections. Within the championship section, there were 7 bands that competed (including Tallgrass). Although Tallgrass is extremely new in this competition, it placed 4th out of 7, with only a few points away to reaching 3rd place! This is an incredible feat for a group that included members who played for only 6 days together, with some never having had experience in the brass band world, competing against bands that have had 20+ years of experience playing together.

UI Trumpet Studio & UI School of Music Members Meet Michael Sachs!

Michael Sachs demonstrating his method of projecting sound with his trumpet

On Friday January 20th, 2017, the Cleveland Orchestra performed a spectacular concert at Hancher Auditorium! The UI Trumpet Studio's TA, Kenken Gorder, was able to coordinate a Q & A session with Principal Trumpet of the Cleveland Orchestra, Michael Sachs and Hancher administration at the conclusion of the concert! Approximately 15-20 UI SOM members were in attendance for the session. Sachs was gracious enough to provide a 1-hour and 5-minute post-concert "hang" as he called it; 4-times the length of the 20-minutes that was originally intended! He had many insightful comments to share not only to trumpet players, but all musicians!
